Andy
Kokesh |
|
Andy was born on January 5, 1946 in Hopkins, Minnesota. He was the fourth of 12 children. Andy and his family moved to Garrison, Minnesota on Lake Mille Lacs in 1956. He attended the one-room Garrison Elementary School on Borden Lake, and then attended Franklin Junior High and Washington High School, graduating in 1964. Andy participated in football and Golden Gloves boxing in high school, and because he lived 20 miles from Brainerd, it was not uncommon for him to have to hitchhike home in order to participate in these activities. The Brainerd Chapter of the Golden Gloves now gives The Andy Kokesh Award to the boxer who has shown unusual traits of sportsmanship, desire, leadership, and hard work. Andy played linebacker and helped his football team nearly win a conference title in 1963. Andy worked his way through Brainerd Community College and the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 1968. After Andy's death, the Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity established a scholarship in his honor. After graduation, Andy felt he needed to fulfill his military obligation, so in September, 1968, he volunteered for the draft. In December, 1968, after finishing basic training, Andy married Barb Donovan. He was shipped to Vietnam in January, 1969 and was killed in Chu Lai, South Vietnam June 21, 1969 in a mortar attack. He was awarded a Bronze Star for heroism, and the Purple Heart. Andy never got back to Mille Lacs, but his name is engraved over the front door of the VFW a few blocks from the shore of Lake Mille Lacs. The Garrison VFW renamed the post "The Andrew F. Kokesh VFW Post 1816." |
